In a previous blog I shared my view that automated CV-scanning systems aren’t fair to the candidates who apply for your jobs. (If you missed that post, check it out here: link) Now that summer is over and there are lots of fresh graduates in the job market, not to mention existing employees contemplating a pre-Christmas change, I thought it would be helpful to set out what I do look for when I’m manually scanning CVs and Cover Letters. I must have read thousands by now so hopefully you’ll benefit from my experience!
Why you shouldn’t use an automated CV sifting service for your recruitment

I’m a big fan of technology – especially when it comes wrapped in shiny, superfast cars! - but I recently had an interesting experience which proves that it’s not always the best solution to a problem. Like many companies, Signature has been repeatedly contacted by software providers who are selling Applicant Tracking Systems. If you’ve not heard of these, they are programmes which manage the recruitment process by sifting CVs, providing an easy-to-understand workflow for applications and keeping all the data in one place. Sounds perfect, right?
Don’t worry, this isn’t a post about the delights of yoga – although I am writing this in the lotus position. (Just kidding!) What I actually want to talk about is flexible working.
As a business owner, you may have a great idea and a growing company, but you'll only be as good as your staff allow you to be. If you want them to work hard, come to you with inspiring ideas and live the ethos of your brand outside the office, then you'll have to ensure that your work force are fully signed up to your vision.
Let’s say you have to clean the floor. What do you use? One correct answer would be a vacuum cleaner, but it’s very likely that you thought ‘Hoover’ instead, despite the fact that this is a brand and not a generic object. When a company is so successful that its name becomes synonymous with a product, it’s an incredibly successful brand.
Anyone who knows me will already know how much I think of my team, they are an essential part of the business and I value their ethics, professionalism and hard work. I know that without their dedication to the Group and their business acumen that Signature would not be where we are today.
I always put customer satisfaction first; it’s a philosophy I practice in all the business sectors I venture into and I believe part of the reason for my success and growth. This not only involves bringing the best products available to market in each sector, but also enabling my clients to experience the Signature service.
